After the hottest day of the year so far brought beachgoers to Barry Island yesterday, many have voiced their shock and anger at the amount of litter left behind.

Takeaway containers, plastic cups, and beach equipment was left on the sand, at the square and promenade.

Council workers and workers at the kiosks had cleared much of the litter, but some items remained.

Chris Zeraschi, at Giovanni's Café said it was "horrendous", but was expecting more this evening.

"We were all talking about it, I think at 6.30/7pm. From Bay Five to the end of the promenade, it was covered in litter," he said.

"I'll give them props because the council have spent a long time cleaning up the place.

"If you come down this evening, you'll probably see the same thing. There's plenty of bins nearby, so it's sheer laziness.

"There are better options of leaving rubbish out, if the bins are full."

Zach Pope, at John's café told Nub News: "There was a lot of litter, mainly on the beach or the grass.

"You could hear people talking about it as they went past.

"But you get used to it on busy days, and especially at the minute because everybody is doing takeaways.

"They've put skips out today, so hopefully they get used," he said.

Franca Zeraschi, at Marco's Café spent the early morning cleaning.

"I was down here at 6am with a bag, sweeping up rubbish, as were many other businesses," she said. "It wasn't just litter, there were socks and towels left behind, and broken bottles. I was worried about children or puppies. "Litter has a huge impact on our businesses, because who would want to queue if there was rubbish left everywhere?" A council worker told Nub News the clean up was still going on this morning, and that they were expecting another busy day.
