What's occurin' down under? Barrybados makes appearance on Australian TV

By Ellyn Wright 3rd Feb 2021

Barrybados owner Louis Ross says seeing one of his iconic t-shirts appear in an Australian news feature "made his day".

Louis was tagged in a video about the Blackheath fire brigade on Australian news outlet 'The Project's' Facebook page.

The reporter revisits the firefighters after the bush fires that peaked in December 2019-January 2020 and reconnects with married couple Kate and Alex Newcombe.

The couple discussed how Kate donated one of her kidneys to her then husband, and the effects the medication Alex had to take were having.

As they catch up with journalist Chris Bath, Alex wears one of Louis' famous Barrybados t-shirts. It turns out Alex is a proud Welshman, with connections to Barry.

"It made my day seeing the t-shirt on the other side of the world," said Louis.

"It's those little things at the moment. It was crazy.

"Apparently Alex came over last year, I don't know how if I'm honest, but apparently he did. He bought the t-shirt in the shop, took it back and obviously wore it on TV.

"There's been so much negativity, there hasn't been much to shout about, and not much is going on, it's all cancelled.

"So it's little things like this that brighten your day up," he said.

Louis is sending Alex some more Barrybados products, strengthening the Barry-Australia connection.

"We send loads to Australia. Outside of the UK, it's probably our biggest destination to send products to," said Louis.

"There seem to be a lot of ex-Barry people living in Australia.

"We send a parcel at least every two or three months, sometimes big orders. Some people come into the shop and buy stuff to send to Australia themselves. There's lots of relations."
