A rabbit has been found abandoned in an alleyway behind a Barry curry house.

The small male ginger rabbit was found on Monday (11 September) near Broad Street in Barry.

''The rabbit was found hopping around some furniture that had been left in the alley.

Rabbit abandonment animal collection officer Gary Lucas said: "The member of the public was on their way to get a takeaway when they found the rabbit in the alleyway and called us.

"They kindly took the rabbit into safe keeping and I then collected the rabbit to take into our care while enquiries are made.

"The rabbit is very friendly and doesn't seem to be injured in any way and is healthy.

''He isn't microchipped so we don't know who he belongs to.

''It appears he has been abandoned, but we don't know what has happened here so we are appealing for information."

Anyone with information is asked to please contact the RSPCA's cruelty line, in complete confidence, on 0300 1234 999.

The rabbit is now in the care of RSPCA Newport Animal Centre and has been named named Toffee.

Gary added: "We will never truly know why people abandon animals.

''Our experience tells us that it could be down to a number of reasons, for example when owners are unable to cope, whether that be with an animal's behaviour, the costs of keeping the pet or other things in their life take over they opt to dump them."

Should you wish to help the RSPCA investigate incidents such as these, you can donate online.
