A petition to upgrade Palmerston playground has gleaned 274 signatures. Campaigners and signatories say the park has been neglected by the Vale of Glamorgan Council in favour of nearby playgrounds.

There are currently just five pieces of equipment, no benches and limited disabled access.

Other playgrounds, including Central Park and Cosmeston, have recently been improved.

"In the six years of going here, the park has had little to no attention from the Vale council," writes the petition's author Jessica Doidge.

"I think it's time for them to upgrade this little park and add more playground equipment for the older children that go here.

"I have noticed other parks have been upgraded but this one seems to have been forgotten."

Other parents have drawn attention to the lack of fencing and the consequent need to clear up dog mess before allowing their children to play.

Nub News asked two of them, Shauna Conant and Leigh Walker-Robinson, how they would like to see the park improved.

"Well, I've had to bring my own chair down for one thing," said Shauna. "We could definitely do with some benches. Other than that it really need just a bit of an upgrade and TLC."

"And fencing," chimes in Leigh. "The amount of dog poo on the floor is pretty gross. Also, there's really not a lot here. When all the kids come out from Palmerston, and you're queuing up for two swings in the entire park, it's a bit of a free for all.

"This is more of a deprived area of Barry and to put it into context, Cosmeston Park was in a much better condition than this one and that has had a whole refurb.

"But then there's also the park in Gibbonsdown that's in even worse condition than this. It says a lot that here and Gibbonsdown haven't been improved."

"And disabled access," continued Shauna. "To get through the kissing gate with a pram but for a wheelchair user it would be impossible.

"It really just needs some improvement. It just feels like it's mostly for dog walkers."

A Vale of Glamorgan Council spokesperson said: "The Council has undertaken large-scale work to upgrade parks and play areas across the County. Like all play areas, the facilities at Palmerston Park are regularly inspected and, though there are no plans to upgrade them at present, this is under constant review.
