LOCAL HEROES: Barry Nisa Local reaching out to struggling families in lockdown
Few in Barry can say they've gone further above and beyond for the community during lockdown than the owners of Nisa Local on Vere Street.
It's a tough time for all businesses, corner shops included. But that hasn't stopped Arwinder Singh and his staff from offering free lunch bags to struggling families during the firebreak.
"Where we are based there's lots of housing benefits customers," Arwinder tells Nub News.
"So a lot of people don't have much money at the best of times, but especially at the moment we feel like we need to do something to help those most affected by the pandemic."
Inspired by Marcus Rashford's free school meals campaign and the nationwide debate over child hunger, Arwinder decided to offer free lunch bags during half-term.
They include a sandwich, packet of crisps, capri sun, apple, Cheestrings, and Squares bar.
"We know the Welsh Government offers free school meals, but the bags have been so popular that people must really need them. They must be making a difference.
"The free sandwiches cost us about £50 a day, but it's worth it to feel like you're making a difference. In life, you have to help others before yourself."
The store has also reduced the prices of many of its essential items until 9 November, the end of the firebreak.
Shoppers can buy 500g of pasta for just 19p, a four pack of toilet rolls for 50p, and two litres of milk for 79p.
"They're only reduced by pennies really, but every little helps. Even if people are just saving £3 or £4 in a shop, that makes a difference for them."
Arwinder grew up in Hong Kong before moving to London and then Barry in 2012. Nub News probes for the source of his generosity of spirit.
"I don't know really," he replies. "It just feels like the right thing to do. Of course it's a difficult time for us as well, but we can make money later. There are people who need help now."
