A Barry man who assaulted a police officer in a pub has been jailed for 16 weeks after his track record of offending was taken into account.

Local Man, Keith Alexander Simpson, 51, admitted a number of charges when he appeared before Cardiff Magistrates.

The court heard Simpson admitted assaulting the officer in an incident in O'Brien's pub on Holton Road on Wednesday, 5 February.

He was sentenced to jail for 12 weeks for the offence and a further four weeks were added for each of three other offences of theft which Simpson admitted.

They included theft of batteries from Wilkinson's store, clothing and electrical items from Poundland and food and alcohol from Iceland.

As each of the additional sentences are deemed as separate to the assault but are concurrent, Simpson will serve 16 weeks.

Though the court took account of his guilty plea, magistrates stated that because of his record and the serious nature of Simpson's crimes, there was no alternative to a custodial sentence.

Simpson also has to pay a victim surcharge of £122.
