Data from the Welsh Government's latest Local Authority Municipal Waste Management Statistics suggests that the Vale of Glamorgan, recycling rate, which includes the data from Barry, have risen to 74.2 percent between April and June 2019.

The latest figures display a 12.2% increase compared to the same quarter in 2018. This is well above Wales' ambitious national target of a 65% recycling rate by 2019/20 and 70% by 2024/25.

The Vale of Glamorgan council has recently made changes to its waste management services. Residents now receive fortnightly collections of black bin waste and limits on the number that will be collected.

New recycling bags have also been implemented in Barry and across the whole of the Vale to reduce the amount of contaminated recycling entering the system.

A separated recycling collection service active in rural Vale areas is also set to be rolled out across Barry, Penarth, Dinas Powys, Sully and surrounding areas in 2020.

The data also suggests that Wales' recycling rate has risen to 67 percent between April and June 2019. This indicates that they have already out performed their 2019/20 targets.

The statistics are provisional and will not be made official until they are published in January 2020 but these figures indicate a significant rise in recycling performance in the Vale of Glamorgan.

As part of its 'Towards Zero Waste' strategy, the Welsh Government is aiming for Wales to become a zero waste nation by 2050.
