Cartref Porthceri care home employee, Jackie Moon, has been nominated for the We Care Wales award for Outstanding Services.

The award is an accolade that recognises, celebrates and shares excellent social care, early years and childcare workers and volunteers across Wales.

Jackie has worked at the council-owned residential home, Cartref Porthceri, for 15 years. She began her career in the role of kitchen assistant and has more recently been working as a domestic assistant.

In recognition of her hard work and commitment to the residents, Jackie was asked to take on the role of Dementia Champion for the home.

Her managers say this has seen her passion take on a new dimension.

Three years ago, Jackie contacted local primary school, Romilly School and in partnership with teacher Sheryl Hopkins, oversaw the creation of a rolling programme whereby year-six pupils visit the home fortnightly to spend time with residents.

Residential Services Operational Manager, Marijke Jenkins, said: "The effect of Jackie's intergenerational project has been nothing short of remarkable. Not only has the intergenerational project engaged and stimulated the residents but it has increased the self-esteem and confidence of the young people who visit.

"The project brings young and old people together, encouraging them to take part in purposeful and beneficial activities. This, in turn, helps break down harmful stereotypes and promotes a greater sense of worth, understanding and respect between generations.

"It's clear that the residents feel a sense of responsibility toward the young people that, and that the young people learn to recognise that older people can become frail, needing care and support as they age.

"Many of the young people are now 'Dementia Friends,' helping us to create a more dementia-friendly local community."

Jackie's project has caught the attention of other primary schools and residential homes across the Vale. She has since committed to assisting in the 'roll-out' of the programme across the county.

Cabinet Member for Social Care and Health, Cllr Ben Gray, said: "Jackie's portfolio demonstrates someone who has consistently gone above and beyond in their work.

"In her day-to-day role, Jackie helps provide a safe, clean and stimulating environment for Cartref's residents. Now as Dementia Champion for the home, she's continued to thrive, providing this invaluable experience for her community.

"Undoubtedly, this recognition is well-deserved and I wish Jackie the best of luck."
